Meaning and symbolism:
The owl (fukurou) is a traditional good-luck bird associated with long life. The name is a play on words — fukurou can be read as 不苦労 (“no hardship”) or as 福来朗 (bringing good fortune). Because owls can turn their heads up to 180°, they symbolize clear foresight and anticipation, and are regarded as auspicious for business prosperity, scholarship, and longevity. This makes the owl a popular gift for Respect-for-the-Aged Day, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, kanreki (60th), koki (70th), kiju (77th) celebrations, retirements, birthdays, and other longevity or celebratory occasions.
Kutani-yaki technique — “Mori”:
This piece features the special Kutani-yaki relief technique called “Mori.” “Mori” uses a raised decorative paint called deco-mori applied with a unique tool called “icchin” (一珍). The deco-mori paint creates a tactile, bumpy surface — almost like a massage when touched. “Mori” is highly skilled and labor-intensive; because few craftsmen practice it today, works using this technique are increasingly rare. Kutani ware is internationally acclaimed as one of Japan’s three major colored porcelains and a representative traditional craft known as “Japan Kutani.”
