Introduction to the painting style of Kutani ware: The "Kokutani" style, pioneered by Saijiro Goto about 360 years ago, was promoted around the Meireki period (1655) by the Daishoji Domain. Under the guidance of the master painter of the Kano school, Morikei Kusumi, this style employs five colors: blue (green), yellow, red, purple, and deep blue. Its boldly composed, visually striking arrangements, coupled with free yet delicate lines, represent the quintessential style of Kutani ware.
Kutani ware is highly regarded worldwide as one of Japan's three major colored porcelain styles and as a representative traditional craft of Japan, known as 'Japan Kutani.'
