This is a rare incense made by blending ambergris (ryūzenkō) with traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Ambergris is a concretion formed in the intestines of sperm whales and is used as a fragrance ingredient. Fresh ambergris is said to smell of the sea and feces, but as it ages it develops a sweet, earthy scent that is highly valued for incense. Historically used as an incense ingredient, ambergris was once described in China as a scent favored by dragons. Because ambergris can only be obtained when pieces excreted or expelled by sperm whales float to the sea surface and wash ashore, it is an extremely precious natural fragrance.
